Annapolis Day 2008:
WSDC
Members Receive Legislative Briefings, Honor Delegate Jane Lawton
By Dee Dee Montgomery
On
Jan. 29, car pools transferred 24 WSDC members to Annapolis for meetings with the Governor and numerous legislators.
After meeting the Governor, we had a docent-led tour of the public rooms of the Governor’s mansion, which is
beautiful and historic. We also had a fascinating meeting with 15 Montgomery County legislators, who explained current
issues and solutions that they are seeking.
At lunch, we also had two special speakers:
Malcolm Woolf, Director of Maryland Energy Administration, who spoke about the issues in our energy future;
and Brad Heavner, State Director for Environment Maryland, who addressed global warming threats and actions needed.
Ellie Kleinman, Vice President for Legislation, did a wonderful
job of organizing this trip with the help of her committee and Jane Merkin who led the trip last year. Susan
Elwell presented yellow Gerber daisy boutonnieres to each WSDC member and each MC legislator to wear in
memory of our former president and Delegate to the General Assembly Jane Lawton, who passed away in November.
